You are absolutely correct about the build quality of the E300's. Bad wiring, bad steering rack, bad transmission - the W210s were just not built to Mercedes caliber. However I am still drawn to them for some reason. The W211 is light years beyond, and the 320 CDI is a hell of an engine with tuning options available for chips, intake and exhaust. However it will be a long time and many miles before they are down in the affordable range given the slow nature of diesel importation to the US.

Well my personal opinion on E300's is that they are not in the same build quality company as the 500E's. The diesel option is appealing with the great bio options we have in the Northwest (We have bio 99 on the pump in town!)

I searched for chip tuning options, and there weren't too many obvious available options. But I have to imagine that someone has a tasty turbo diesel performance chip option -- I just couldn't find it in the time I had today. Anyone have recommendations?

A classmate in high schools father had one of these. I remember one particularly fast lunch break on the freeways of Eugene :) Very fun cars, the build quality and rock solid nature of the beast is evident the moment you sit down. I picked up an issue of a new magazine 0-60 (very good) last night and one of the editors is tuning a 500E to be a "stealth autobahn machine." Should be interesting to watch.

Driving down I-5 last night I had my own idea for an I-5bahn machine. 1999 E300 Turbodiesel, 18'' AMG monoblocks, H&R sport springs, some bumpers and skirts (the diesels are horribly unfinished looking), and a Valentine 1. I figure 80-90 mph at 25mpg or so would make for a good road trip machine. What do yah think dc? Man problem is these cars are still very desirable and cost a pretty penny on the used market despite being close to two generations old and having high mileage.
