Day 1 in Scottsdale Prepping for the 2009 Brighton Rally

After a very long day of travel (3 hours fly time, 7 hours airport time), we arrived late last night in Scottsdale. Our hosts, Shane and Karen from Brighton Motorsport, were very patient with our ever changing travel plans and were good enough to pick us up, even at 11:30pm. Thank you guys!

Today we went with Shane to pick up their 1972 Ferrari 365GTC/4. It has been getting the once over by their Ferrari specialist to make sure it's ready for the rally on Sunday. It's getting a little special attention because it's being guest driven by none other than two time Indy 500 champion, Arie Luyendyk (wikipedia entry)! Here is a picture when we picked it up:

Then we were on to Brighton Motorsports. I followed Shane in his Tahoe while he gave the 365 it's first drive in some time. It was purchased earlier this year, but he confesses it hasn't been driven as much as he would've liked. Not to worry, he as he made up for lost time and treated us to some wonderful music from that big V12 motor. A short while later, he handed us the keys to give it some more test time. It runs fantastic and is very easy to drive once out of congestion. Here is a picture of me with a huge grin on my face behind the wheel:

Check out this fantastic lap ridden and narrated by Steve Hislop aboard an RC45 in 1994:

I love how he talks about that first section and how he normally hits 170mph through there on a flying lap! This is such a strong reminder that I need to visit this event in person sometime soon... I mean how much longer can such a bad ass and dangerous event continue to run like this?!

A Beginners Guide to Laguna Seca on YouTube

Here's a cool video of an S2000 at Laguna Seca narrated by an instructor for a track day. It's super easy to follow along and the Honda S2000 just sings all the way around the track. Interesting that he notes the corkscrew is completey screwed up in Gran Turismo too. As much as I wish my GT experience would translate to real world instruction at courses I've never visited, this reminds me there is no substitute for the real thing.

Lancia Delta S4 Onboard Video at Bergrennen HillClimb

I was browsing one of my new favorites, RetroSceneMagazine, and their latest blog post featuring some link love and this great video of a Lancia Delta S4 running up a hillclimb event:

The pace and scenery are so fantastic! I'm so glad that events like this still exist! Strips of beautiful road closed off for time trials that run right in the middle of small villages, rolling country side, and deep forests. And it always reminds me how lucky we are to be able to run the Larison Rock Hillclimb right in our own backyard.

The video is stamped by DasRacingTeam.ch. Their website fails the translators so I'm not sure if they're a club, or group of owners, or what. But they do have some nice photo galleries and full videos on the site if you care to stumble around.

I absolutely love this clip from Alex King. His coverage of the 2008 Monaco Gran Prix Historique in this video is wonderfully shot and edited. The Stone's tune in the background is also a great pairing.
